Evening primrose oil for weight loss

Evening Primrose oil is extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis). It is native to the United States of America. Most of the weight loss benefits from evening primrose oil are attributed to it's gamma linolenic acid (GLA) content. It is an omega-6 fatty acid and also it is one of the essential fatty acids (EFA) which helps reduce inflammation of organs in the body. It plays a major role in the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are known to function in a similar manner as hormones in the body. They were first found in the prostrate gland and hence, received it's name. They help in normal functioning of organs in the body.

Normally, GLA is produced in the body by converting linolenic acid in the body. However, certain factors such as high fat diet, consuming too much processed food, alcohol or  deficiency of vitamin B3, B6, vitamin C, biotin, magnesium and zinc can prevent this conversion. Due to the outstanding benefits of GLA, evening primrose oil is found to be useful in treating obesity, heart disease, arthritis, infertility, PMS, etc.

Weight loss benefit: The GLA in evening primrose oil (EPO) plays a major role here. It helps activate the brown fat cells in your body for energy purpose (or burn calories). These fats cells can burn more calories than the ordinary fat cells. It also activates the 'sodium pump' process in the body which is responsible for the energy expenditure of cells. Hence, it boosts the body's natural fat burning mechanism.

Reduces appetite: Intake of EPO supplements regularly increases the levels of serotonin levels in the brain, which gives an early signal to the body that you are full. This helps you eat less at a time and suppresses appetite.

Assists in fertility: Obese women many a times face fertility problems. EPO is a good solution, it helps increase the production and quality cervical mucus which help the sperms to swim easily through the uterus and also keeps them alive for about 5 days.

Heart care: Prostaglandins reduce the formation of blood clots, prevent arterial blockages and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. They also help cut the cholesterol in the blood.

Corrects diabetic neuropathy: Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus leads to diabetic complications such as diabetic neuropathy where the patient finds lack of sensation and numbness in the feet. EPO supplements have been proved to reduce this numbness.

Treat arthritis: The anti inflammatory action of GLA reduces inflammation at the joints and reduce arthritic symptoms and pain. .

Reduces mood swings and depression: These two behaviors are common in obese individuals. Unsatisfied with self appearance, feeling of rejection due to obesity can cause anxiety, mood swings or depression. The root cause for such feelings is low levels of serotonin in the brain. EPO stimulates the production of serotonin which is a neurotransmitter in the brain and gives you a cheerful feeling.

Controls acne: Application of EPO by mixing them in regular creams or moisturizers and reduce acne in obese males/females with hormonal imbalances.
